On Saturday, August 15, an Pasadena Police Department Officer involved shooting occurred on
Raymond Avenue right in front of the Alkebulan Cultural Center after two officers stopped a
vehicle for a vehicle code violation (California Code, Vehicle Code - VEH § 5201).
During the traffic stop, the driver cooperated with officers and admitted he was driving on
a suspended license, however, the passenger in the vehicle elected to run away. While running,
the passenger removed a handgun from his waistband. As a result, one of the officers shot the
fleeing African-American man who has been identified as Anthony McClain (32) of Pasadena.
According to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office, McClain died from the gunshot wound to
the torso. He was pronounced dead at Huntington Hospital in Pasadena that same night.
Thursday, PPD released the bodycam footage, video from the dashboard camera on the patrol car
and surveillance video from a nearby business.
Interviews of witnesses and of the involved officers have been conducted. Also, an analysis of
video and forensic evidence have taken place. The incident is still under investigation with
additional facts and evidence possible.
After the investigation is complete, a Use of Force Hearing will take place and then Chief John
Perez will make a final determination whether the officers involved acted within department policy.
This incident is actively being investigated by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office
and the City of Pasadena will also initiate an independent third party review.

During Monday’s City Council meeting, Vice Mayor Tyron Hampton argued that the unidentified officer
was out of policy and should be fired.
